The south of Komodo National Park holds Manta Alley, the park’s richest macro diving and anchorages with almost no other boats — but it sits behind colder upwelling water at 21–25 °C, 10–20 metre visibility and Indian Ocean swell. A 3D2N cannot reach it without losing the Padar sunrise.
The half of the park most visitors never see
Komodo National Park covers roughly 1,817 square kilometres of land and sea. A standard 3D2N itinerary works the northern and central third of it: Kelor, Kalong, Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo or Rinca, Karang Makassar, Taka Makassar, Siaba, Kanawa. That is not laziness — it is arithmetic. The Padar sunrise anchors the schedule, and the southern coast is too far to reach and return from without losing it.
The fourth night is what unlocks the south. Here is what is down there and what it costs you in comfort to get it.

Temperature and visibility figures are seasonal norms compiled from Komodo dive operator guides, not forecasts for a given day. Wear more exposure protection in the south than you think you need.
The sites that justify the extra day

Whole-boat prices, not per person. Entry point is USD 7,800 per night (about IDR 123,500,000 at the rate used on the operator’s Indonesian listing).
On a whole-boat basis the step from 3D2N to 4D3N is USD 2,500 for up to eight guests, which is the largest single increment on the card. It buys a genuine extra sailing day rather than another night at the same anchorage — and if you are diving, it buys the slack that lets a guide put you in the water at the right state of tide rather than at the scheduled hour.
Who should do it, and who should not
Do the south if you dive at intermediate level or above, you have been to Komodo before, you photograph macro, or the thing you most want from the trip is an anchorage with no other boats in it.
Skip the south if this is a first visit and your list is Padar, Pink Beach, dragons and mantas; if you are travelling with young children; if you are prone to seasickness — the exposed coast is where a Komodo itinerary is least comfortable, and there is guidance on managing that in our seasickness and cabin guide; or if you are travelling in a month where the wind is already making the northern crossings lively.
Weather changes the plan, and should
The southern coast is the section of any Komodo itinerary most likely to be modified. If the captain turns north instead of running the southern leg, that is a judgement about swell on an exposed coast made by someone who sails it weekly. A boat that runs the advertised route in conditions that do not suit it is not being generous.

Why is south Komodo colder than the north?
Upwelling from the Indian Ocean. Southern sites can drop to 21–25 °C at the peak of the June–September upwelling against 26–29 °C in the north, with a sharp thermocline and visibility of 10–20 metres rather than 15–30.
Is Manta Alley better than Manta Point?
They are different. Manta Alley in the south has the highest reported manta density — 20 to 50 or more on a good day — but it is a moderate-to-strong current site with swell and negative entries, for intermediate to advanced divers. Karang Makassar in the north is an all-levels drift where snorkellers can join.
Do you need a 4D3N to reach south Komodo?
In practice yes. Four days and three nights is the shortest format that can put a full sailing day into the south without cutting the Padar sunrise or the ranger trek. Some 5D4N itineraries go further and spend two nights down there.
Is the south rougher?
It can be. The southern coast is exposed to Indian Ocean swell in a way the northern channels are not, and July to August wind adds to it. This is the part of a Komodo itinerary most likely to be modified for weather, and that modification is a good sign rather than a bad one.
Can snorkellers enjoy south Komodo?
Partly. Some southern sites are diver-oriented because of current, depth and swell. Snorkellers get the coastline, the emptier anchorages and the wildlife on shore, but the headline southern dive sites are not snorkel stops in the way Karang Makassar is.
