Forget features for a moment and ask a single question: do you want to be on the Padar ridge at sunrise? If yes, a day trip cannot do it, and no amount of speed changes that. If no, a day trip may be the right answer and you can save several hundred dollars.

The honest reading: the day tour is not bad value. It is about a quarter to an eighth of the cruise price and it does show you the park. What it cannot buy at any price is an hour of the day it is not there for.
What the extra hours actually contain
04:30–06:00. The ridge at Padar with low light across the three bays, before the day boats arrive. Also the coolest part of the climb — the same walk at 10:00 in August is a materially harder piece of exercise.
17:35–18:53, depending on month. The flying-fox exodus at Kalong. Thousands of fruit bats leaving the mangroves against the sunset, watched from the deck of a boat already at anchor for the night. No day boat is in the park at that hour.

Comfort, and when it matters
A speedboat is quicker between islands and transmits every piece of chop into your spine. A 33.45-metre, 161-gross-tonne phinisi cruising at 7–9 knots is slower and rides through the same water. In April–June and September–November the difference is modest because the sea is calm. In July–August wind and the December–March monsoon it is the difference between a good day and a long one.

Who should take the day trip
Take the day trip if Komodo is one item on a longer Indonesian itinerary, if you have a fixed flight out the following morning, if you are travelling with someone who will not sleep on a boat, or if the budget genuinely stops at around USD 105. You will see a dragon, you will stand on Padar, and you will have done Komodo.
