Kanawa is where a lot of Komodo cruise brochures quietly overpromise. So here is the version we would give a friend.

Kanawa is a small island roughly 1 to 1.5 hours from Labuan Bajo with a house reef you can reach by walking off the beach — no tender, no drift, no current briefing. That accessibility is genuinely valuable on the third morning of a cruise, when guests have been up at 04:30 for Padar and have snorkelled off a moving tender four times. It is the easiest water on the itinerary.

The reef itself is mixed. There is visible bleaching damage, and there is anchor and chain scarring in the shallows where boats have moored for years because the bay is protected. There are also healthy sections, plenty of reef fish, and reliably clear shallow water. Calling it pristine would be untrue. Calling it not worth stopping at would also be untrue.

This is the part worth understanding, because it applies to every sheltered anchorage in the park and it changes how you behave in the water.

Boats anchor where they are protected from swell. Protection means shallow, enclosed water. Shallow, enclosed water is exactly where the branching corals that snorkellers most want to see grow. Every chain that swings across a bottom on a changing tide takes some of it. Add elevated sea temperatures during bleaching events and the shallow, warm, enclosed water is also the first to bleach.

So the scarring you see at Kanawa is not evidence of a badly run island. It is the ordinary arithmetic of a popular anchorage, and it is why mooring practice matters more than any single visitor’s sunscreen. Where Kanawa sits in the itinerary

Kanawa is a first-day or last-day stop because of its proximity to Labuan Bajo. On the standard 3D2N it is usually the final snorkel before the run back to the harbour by early afternoon on day three. How to snorkel a damaged reef well

Four things, and they are not moralising — they are what makes the difference at a site this shallow.

Never stand on the reef. If you need to rest, swim to sand or float on your back. A single foot placed on a branching coral head removes decades.

Keep your fins up. Most damage from snorkellers is fin-kick, not hands, and it happens in water shallower than a metre.

Use a rash guard instead of more sunscreen. Reef-safe formulations help, but fabric is better than chemistry in shallow enclosed water.

Look at the recovering sections. Bleached coral is not dead coral. New recruitment on old structure is visible at Kanawa if you slow down enough to notice it, and it is more interesting than another photograph of a clownfish.

Should you skip it?

No — but calibrate. If your priority is coral quality, spend your energy at Batu Bolong, the northern pinnacles and the drift sites, and treat Kanawa as the gentle finish it is. If you are travelling with children, nervous swimmers or anyone who has found the tender transfers tiring, Kanawa may well be the stop they remember most fondly, precisely because nothing about it is demanding.
