Book three to six months ahead for July–August, two to three months for April–June, one to three months for September–November and one to two months for December–March. On an eight-cabin boat you are competing for specific cabins, not for boats — balcony cabins go first.

Lead time by month, with the reason attached

The question behind “how early should I book” is really “what am I competing for.” In Komodo you are not competing for boats — Labuan Bajo has plenty of hulls. You are competing for good cabins on small boats in the right week. That is a much smaller pool, and it explains why the answer changes so sharply by month.

WindowSea stateWhat it means on boardRate band
April–JuneCalmest water of the year, best visibilityShortest crossings, highest chance of reaching every stopShoulder
July–AugustGood visibility, windy in open straits and around PadarSwell on the Padar run; deck dining may move indoorsPeak — book 3–6 months ahead
September–NovemberCalm again, excellent visibilityThe quietest premium window; best conditions-to-price ratioShoulder
December–MarchMonsoon, roughest sea, some vessels in maintenanceHigher chance of itinerary changes; peak manta densityLow — manta season, not “bad” season
Departure windowBook byWhat runs out first
July–August 2027 (peak)3–6 months ahead — roughly Jan–Apr 2027Upper-deck and balcony cabins; whole-boat charter dates around public holidays
April–June 20272–3 months aheadWeekend-adjacent departures; four-berth family cabins
September–November 20271–3 months aheadLittle runs out; this is the flexible window
December–March 2027/281–2 months aheadSailing vessels — some boats are in maintenance, so confirm the specific boat

These are operational patterns from how departures fill, not guarantees. A single large group booking can empty a departure overnight in any month.

What you are actually reserving

On an eight-cabin boat, “available” and “the cabin you wanted” are very different states. There are exactly two cabins with a private balcony and a bathtub on Naturalia, and exactly two four-berth cabins. Book late in peak season and you are choosing from what is left, which in practice means the lower deck.

Eight cabins, 24 berths. Rates are per person on a shared (open-trip) departure and exclude national park fees.

The full deck plan, engine and generator specification and the reasoning behind each cabin rate are on the vessel specifications page page.

Booking early versus booking cheap

There is a persistent belief that Komodo cruises discount heavily at the last minute. In the shoulder months there is some truth to it on departures that have not filled. In peak season there is essentially none: the boats fill, and unsold berths sell at the standard rate to guests already in Labuan Bajo.

The more reliable saving is not timing your booking — it is timing your travel. Moving a trip from August to October moves you from the peak band to the shoulder band, into calmer water, with fewer boats at every anchorage. That is a bigger effect than any last-minute discount.

The sequence that avoids the classic mistake

Book in this order: boat, then flights, then hotel. Departures leave on fixed days; flights from Bali (about 1–1.5 hours) and Jakarta (about 2–2.5 hours) run daily on Garuda, Batik, Citilink and Lion Air Group with seasonal frequency changes. It is far easier to move a flight than a cabin.

Allow a night in Labuan Bajo before departure if your inbound flight lands the same morning. Komodo Airport delays are ordinary rather than exceptional, and a delayed arrival does not delay a boat — the vessel sails on the tide and the ranger schedule, not on your itinerary.

Locking the rate

A rate becomes yours when the deposit lands, not when it is quoted. Fifty per cent holds the date; the balance is due 30 days before departure; the deposit is non-refundable. The complete terms sit on the rates and booking page page, and the step-by-step process including exactly what to send the reservations desk is in our step-by-step booking guide.

Whole-boat prices, not per person. Entry point is USD 7,800 per night (about IDR 123,500,000 at the rate used on the operator’s Indonesian listing).

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I book a Komodo cruise for 2027?

Three to six months for July and August, two to three months for April to June, one to three months for September to November, and one to two months for December to March. Peak-season cabins on small boats are the constraint, not boats in general — there are more berths in Labuan Bajo than there are good berths.

Is it cheaper to book a Komodo cruise last minute?

Sometimes, in shoulder months, on departures that have not filled — but you give up cabin choice, and on an eight-cabin boat cabin choice is the whole trip. In July and August last-minute means whatever is left, which is usually a lower-deck berth at a peak-season rate.

When do 2027 rates get confirmed?

Rates on this site are quoted for the 2027 season and were last reviewed on 1 August 2026. Operators typically confirm the following season’s card in the second half of the preceding year, so a rate quoted more than a year ahead should always be re-confirmed in writing before you deposit.

Can I hold a date without paying?

Only informally and only briefly. The 50 per cent deposit is what actually blocks the cabin. If you cannot deposit yet, ask the reservations desk to tell you when someone else enquires about the same cabin rather than assuming your dates are safe.

What is the best month to sail if I can choose freely?

April to June or September to November. Those are the calmest, clearest months and they sit in the shoulder rate band. September to November in particular is the quietest premium window of the year.

Do I book flights or the boat first?

The boat. Departure days are fixed and cabins are finite; flights to Labuan Bajo run daily from Bali and Jakarta and can be re-timed around a confirmed sailing. Booking flights first is the most common way people end up on the wrong departure.
