Three things nobody tells first-timers

The safety briefing is the useful part of boarding. Life vest location, muster point, how the tender loads and unloads, and what to do if you are the slowest person on a trek. It takes a few minutes and it is the only briefing of the trip.

The first snorkel is a rehearsal. Kelor and Kanawa are shallow and sheltered on purpose. Use it to check your mask seal, work out whether you want fins, and find out how the tender boarding works while the water is calm — not at Karang Makassar in a drift.

What is included from the moment you board

Packing, only the parts that matter for day one

A soft bag rather than a hard suitcase — cabins have limited floor space and tenders have none. A rash guard, because you will be in shallow tropical water repeatedly and fabric beats reapplying sunscreen. A headtorch for the Padar climb, which happens in the dark. Motion tablets, taken with dinner. A dry bag for the tender transfers, which are wet more often than not. Reef-safe sunscreen. Shoes with grip for Padar — the ridge is loose and dusty in dry season.

What you can leave: an underwater camera, because professional drone, GoPro and mirrorless documentation is included; and a hairdryer, because generator load at anchor is prioritised for air conditioning.

The rest of the itinerary

Day two is the long one: Padar before dawn, Pink Beach, a ranger-escorted dragon trek on Komodo or Rinca, then the manta drift at Karang Makassar and the sandbar at Taka Makassar in whichever order the current allows.
