Is October a Good Time for a Komodo Cruise in 2027?

The short answer, and the reason

October is one of the two best months to cruise Komodo, and it is the better of the two for value. It sits inside the September–November calm window, it is past the July–August wind, and it prices in the shoulder band.

The unusual thing about this window is that it breaks the normal rule. Almost everywhere in travel, better conditions cost more. In Komodo, September to November delivers the calmest water and the clearest visibility of the second half of the year at a lower rate than the crowded, windier peak two months earlier.

The sunrise detail that matters in October

Sunrise at Padar moves by 47 minutes across the year, and October sits in the early part of the range. Times are computed for 8°39′S, 119°35′E in WITA, accurate to about three minutes.

What the shoulder band means in practice is availability rather than a headline discount: in October the good cabins are still there four to six weeks out, whereas in July and August the balcony cabins go three to six months ahead. What could go wrong in October

Be fair about the risks. Late October begins the transition toward the December monsoon, and the last week can bring the first unsettled weather of the season. Rain in Komodo is usually short and heavy rather than all-day, but it can turn a Padar morning into a grey one.

Manta density is also not at its peak — that is December to March, when plankton-rich water arrives and visibility drops in exchange. If your single goal is the largest possible manta aggregation and you accept rough seas to get it, October is not your month. If you want mantas and visibility and a calm crossing, it is close to ideal.

September, October, November: choosing between them

September — the transition out of the windy peak. Sunrise 05:56. Quieter than August almost immediately.

October — the middle of the window and the most reliable. Sunrise 05:39. The month we would book if given a free choice.

November — earliest sunrise of the year at 05:31, so the earliest wake-up and the softest light, with a rising chance of unsettled weather in the last week as the monsoon approaches.
