Day one of a Komodo cruise is a hotel or airport pickup, boarding and safety briefing around mid-morning, a one-hour leg to Kelor or Kanawa, lunch under way, an afternoon snorkel, then Kalong at dusk for the flying-fox exodus and the first night at anchor before the overnight run to Padar.

Hour by hour, the first day

Most itineraries describe day one as “boarding, snorkelling, sunset at Kalong.” Here is the version with hours attached, so you know what to prepare and when.

Approximate timeWhat happensWhat to have ready
MorningPickup from your Labuan Bajo hotel or Komodo Airport, transfer to the harbourSoft bag — hard suitcases are awkward in cabins and on the tender
About 10:30 (market norm)Boarding, cabin allocation, safety briefingPassport details already given at booking; listen to the briefing
+1 hourFirst leg under way. Labuan Bajo to Kelor is about 1 hour; Kanawa is 1–1.5Sunscreen on before you are needed on deck
MiddayLunch served on board, usually under way or at the first anchorageDietary requirements were given at booking, not now
Early afternoonFirst snorkel — shallow, sheltered, doubles as a gear checkRash guard rather than more sunscreen
Mid afternoonSecond leg. Kelor to Manjarite is 0.5–1 hour; Manjarite to Kalong about 1 hourDeck shower, then dry clothes
Dusk (17:35–18:53 by month)Kalong: thousands of flying foxes leave the mangroves against the sunsetCamera charged; long lens if you have one
EveningDinner at anchor, briefing for the Padar morningMotion tablet now, not later
NightOvernight run to Padar, 3–4 hours, engine under loadPadar clothes and headtorch already laid out

Times are operational patterns, not a fixed schedule. Departure hour, stop order and anchorage all move with tide, wind and harbour clearance. Published departure times for 3D2N products in this market cluster around 10:30 with early-afternoon returns on the final day.

Three things nobody tells first-timers

The safety briefing is the useful part of boarding. Life vest location, muster point, how the tender loads and unloads, and what to do if you are the slowest person on a trek. It takes a few minutes and it is the only briefing of the trip.

The first snorkel is a rehearsal. Kelor and Kanawa are shallow and sheltered on purpose. Use it to check your mask seal, work out whether you want fins, and find out how the tender boarding works while the water is calm — not at Karang Makassar in a drift.

Day one ends earlier than you think. If the Padar wake-up is 04:26, dinner and bed at a sensible hour is not being boring, it is the difference between the ridge at dawn being wonderful and being an ordeal. The full Padar timing table by month is on the Padar Island timing and tides page.

Mineral water, coffee and teaPersonal snacks

Snorkelling gear, life vests, all meals, water, coffee and tea, the guide and the transfers are all part of the fare from boarding onward. Diving is separate and arranged at booking. The complete inclusions discussion is in what a Komodo cruise fare includes.

Packing, only the parts that matter for day one

A soft bag rather than a hard suitcase — cabins have limited floor space and tenders have none. A rash guard, because you will be in shallow tropical water repeatedly and fabric beats reapplying sunscreen. A headtorch for the Padar climb, which happens in the dark. Motion tablets, taken with dinner. A dry bag for the tender transfers, which are wet more often than not. Reef-safe sunscreen. Shoes with grip for Padar — the ridge is loose and dusty in dry season.

What you can leave: an underwater camera, because professional drone, GoPro and mirrorless documentation is included; and a hairdryer, because generator load at anchor is prioritised for air conditioning.

The rest of the itinerary

Day two is the long one: Padar before dawn, Pink Beach, a ranger-escorted dragon trek on Komodo or Rinca, then the manta drift at Karang Makassar and the sandbar at Taka Makassar in whichever order the current allows. Day three is Siaba Besar and Kanawa, then the run back to the harbour by early afternoon. The complete day-by-day with prices is on the 3D2N itinerary and price page, and every leg with sailing hours is on the route map and sailing hours page.

Frequently asked questions

What happens on day one of a Komodo cruise?

Pickup from your Labuan Bajo hotel or Komodo Airport, boarding and safety briefing at the harbour, then the first short leg — about an hour to Kelor or one to one and a half hours to Kanawa. Lunch is served under way. Afternoon brings a second snorkel stop, then Kalong for the flying-fox exodus at dusk and the first night at anchor.

What time do Komodo cruises depart from Labuan Bajo?

Mid-morning is the norm across this market — published 3D2N departures in Labuan Bajo run around 10:30, with returns early afternoon on the final day. Your exact time comes with your confirmation, and it moves with tide and harbour clearance.

Do you need to be on board early?

Be at the harbour at the time on your confirmation, not earlier and definitely not later. The boat sails on tide and harbour clearance, not on guest arrivals. If your inbound flight lands the same morning, take a night in Labuan Bajo first — Komodo Airport delays are ordinary.

What is the first thing that happens on board?

A safety briefing: life vests, life raft, muster point, tender procedure and what to do if you fall behind on a trek. It is short and it is the one part of the day worth listening to properly.

When do you first get in the water?

Usually within two to three hours of leaving the harbour. The first stop — Kelor or Kanawa depending on the departure time and tide — is a shallow, sheltered snorkel that doubles as an equipment check before the more demanding sites.

What should I do differently on day one?

Three things: take a motion tablet with dinner rather than at 02:00 before the overnight Padar run, set out your Padar clothes and headtorch before you sleep, and drink more water than feels necessary. Almost every difficult second morning traces back to one of those three.
