The number that actually changes your day

Guest count is the most quotable specification in Komodo cruising and the least examined. Boats advertise “small groups” and “intimate sailing” without publishing a figure. So let us put the published numbers side by side and then explain which of them matter.

Capacities are as published in a 2026 Labuan Bajo operator listing covering the shared-boat market. Vessel names are omitted because capacities change with refits and because the point here is the range, not a league table.

Why 24 versus 35 is not a third less of everything

Three specific consequences, and none of them are about elbow room at dinner.

Tender runs. A tender carries a fixed number. Landing 35 guests at Padar before sunrise takes more runs than landing 24, and the runs happen in the dark inside a window of about forty minutes. The guests on the last run reach the ridge later, and in November the useful light starts at 05:31 whether or not everyone is up there.

Ranger queues. Trekking on Komodo or Rinca is ranger-escorted in groups. A larger boat is split into more groups or waits longer to be assigned one.

Fresh water. Naturalia carries 8,000 litres. Divide that by 24 guests over three days including deck showers after every snorkel and the arithmetic works. Divide the same tank by 35 and it does not — which is why some boats ration rinses on the last day.

The numbers that matter more than guest count

What you pay for the difference

Naturalia’s entry cabin at USD 400 sits inside the published band for 32–35-guest sharing boats. That is the honest headline: you are not always paying a premium for a lower guest count — sometimes you are simply paying attention. Where the premium appears is at the top cabins, where USD 680–800 buys a balcony, a bathtub and a sea view.

When more guests is the right answer

Solo travellers who want company. Groups of friends who would rather share a bigger boat cheaply than split a smaller one expensively. Anyone travelling on the tightest budget, where USD 271 on a 35-guest boat genuinely beats not going.

And when fewer is right: honeymoons, photographers who need deck space at dawn, families who want two adjacent cabins, older guests for whom four tender transfers a day is the limiting factor, and anyone travelling in July–August when every anchorage is busier and personal space becomes scarce.

Does the number of guests on a Komodo boat matter?

It decides how much of your day is spent queuing. Tender capacity is fixed, so 35 guests means more shuttle runs to shore than 24. At Padar, where everyone lands within the same 40-minute window before sunrise, that difference is measured in your position on the ridge when the light arrives.

How many guests does Naturalia carry?

A maximum of 24, in 8 cabins across 33.45 metres and 161 gross tonnes. Published capacities for other boats in this market include 32–35, 21, 20, 16, 14 and 12 guests, so 24 sits in the middle of the range on a comparatively large hull.

Is a smaller boat always better?

No. Smaller hulls move more in swell, carry less fresh water and often run a single generator. A 12-guest boat can be a worse night’s sleep than a 24-guest one. Guest count matters for queuing; tonnage and generator capacity matter for comfort.

What is a good guest-to-space ratio in Komodo?

There is no industry standard, so compare tonnage per guest rather than guest count alone. Naturalia is 161 GT across 24 guests. A boat carrying 35 guests on a similar or smaller hull is a materially denser experience even if the cabin photos look alike.

Does a bigger boat mean a better itinerary?

No. Every operator sails the same national park and the same core anchorages. Size affects sea-keeping, water and power capacity, and how long tender operations take — not which islands you see.

How many bathrooms are there per guest?

All eight cabins on Naturalia are en-suite, and Tide has two bathrooms because it sleeps four. That means no shared facilities at any cabin rate, which is not universal at the lower end of this market.
