Our Komodo liveaboard adventure kicked off from Labuan Bajo, the bustling hub that’s really the only major city center anywhere near Komodo National Park. It’s the natural jumping-off point for exploring the 26 small islands and three major islands that make up the park off the coast of Flores. We were on a 4D3N itinerary, and for this trip, we specifically chose a durable phinisi. Knowing we’d be out at sea for several days, the sturdy build of a traditional phinisi felt like the right call for navigating these waters.
Diving into Komodo’s Best Season
We timed our trip for early August, which falls squarely within the best time to dive in Komodo, generally April to August. While July and August are known for having the coldest sea temperatures, they also bring the most nutrient-rich waters, promising incredible marine life. We certainly weren’t disappointed! Plus, April to November is considered the dry season here, so we enjoyed clear skies for most of our journey. Before even setting sail, we handled the necessary fees. The harbour fee for the entire liveaboard trip was IDR 25,000 per person, paid just once. On the islands, the Padar Island ranger fee was IDR 150,000 shared per group, and for Komodo or Rinca Island, it was IDR 200,000 shared per group. These are standard charges for park access.
Our Liveaboard Experience: Vhale and Beyond
While our specific phinisi was an older vessel, we did look into newer options like Vhale Liveaboard. Vhale, for example, is launching in 2025 and will offer a capacity of 32–35 passengers across 12 comfortable cabins. Their estimated price for a 3D2N shared Komodo trip ranges from USD 334.39 to USD 544.87 per person. It’s a good benchmark for what to expect in terms of cost for a well-equipped liveaboard. Our durable phinisi, though, provided all the necessary comforts and felt incredibly stable, which was reassuring given the amount of time we spent exploring the diverse dive sites and stunning landscapes of the Komodo National Park.
